When it comes to wealth transfer, it’s not just about passing down money — it’s about imparting values, stories, and experiences that shape the next generation.

My daughter Katie recently told me that my grandson Charlie wants to go fly fishing with me.

This got me excited because it reminded me of my own cherished fly fishing experiences.

My favorite memory is fishing on the Platt River in Saratoga, Wyoming, where I caught six Rainbow Trout with the help of a guide.

It wasn’t just about the fish; it was about the journey and the mentors who taught me.

I want to share moments like this with Charlie too – not just to teach him about fishing, but to help him understand the value of learning from others, being patient, and appreciating nature.

My hope is to guide him, just as mentors once guided me, creating memories and instilling values that will stay with him.

The technology of the future may change the way experiences are shared –

One day Charlie may use AI GPS to find the best fishing spot, a drone that senses water temperature and fish movement, a pocket-sized 3D printer to make a new rod if his breaks, and a special suit that camouflages him in the water.

And I might be able to use augmented reality glasses to be right there beside him – even if I’m miles away – allowing me to hear, feel, see and smell the whole experience in real time – listening to his stories and sharing mine.  What a gift to us both.

No matter how the world changes – the core values we pass on to our loved ones remain the same.
